FOREWORD

Ted Clark’s book Shipping Clerk to CEO is an inspiring read, outlining a straight-forward and well proven path to success that you won’t get in a fancy MBA program.

I should know, I graduated from Wharton and attended Harvard’s CEO school.

As CEO at H.B. Fuller, a $3 billion publicly traded company, I have known Ted for over 15 years and worked side by side with him as COO for the last four years. As partners, we’ve worked together to build greatness at H.B. Fuller and I’ve learned many lessons from him and have seen his advice in action through his words and deeds – he’s impacted thousands of our employees and his book is a gift to anyone looking for proven advice on how to succeed in business (and in life).

Ted spells out a personal career model which says, “anyone can do it”. His 15 “lessons” including trust, networking, learning, customer advocacy are all elements of his everyday approach to solving problems. These lessons have enabled him to grow our business, create followers and mentor thousands of our employees as he drove sizable share gains and profit improvements during a flawless integration process in which we lost none of the key business leaders. H.B. Fuller purchased the company Ted built up as CEO for $1.575 billion but it was Ted and his ability lead with passion and purpose that has proven to be the most valuable asset.

Whether you’ve got a high school degree or an MBA from Wharton, you can learn from Ted and his book.

I’m grateful to have worked alongside him and for all the lessons he’s taught me. I’m so thankful that he wrote this inspiring, easy to read book so that many others could understand his story and success model.
